It is an island of wide contrasts in scenery from
the lush and green vegetation in the North, to the sunbaked dry coast
in the South which makes it a sunworshipers' paradise. In the centre
of the Island, Mount Teide dominates the entire island, being the
highest mountain in Spain, a dormant volcano standing at just over 12
000 feet above sea level. The name "Teide" means "The White
Mountain", in the ancient language of the Guanches as it is covered
with snow during the winter months. The Guanches were the first
inhabitants of the island, being very tall (over 6 feet), with blonde
hair and blue eyes.
